Belozersk

Belozersk is the most ancient town of the Russian North. It is situated near the White lake and was already mentioned in the old Russian annals in 862. In 13th century Belozersk became a main town of Belozersk principality. As Veliky Ustyug, it was early on the Muskovy, and in 15th century the tsar Ivan III ordered to build here earthworks.
15-16th centuries is the time of flourishing of the town. Belozersk was located in the center of the trade ways connecting the South and the North, that’s why it had its own trade and was a moderator of many mercantile operations. At this time stone cathedrals were built and decorated the town. In 1553 the citizens financed erecting of the magnificent Church of Assumption, the first stone building in the town. Situated on the height this temple and the Church of Epiphany formed a picturesque architectural ensemble, preserved to our time.
Modern Belozersk is wide famous for its historical and architectural monuments. The ancient past of the town attracts tourists regularly. The general sights are majestic earthworks, the Church of Assumption, the Transfiguration Cathedral, build in 1668-1670, the Church of All-merciful Savior of 18th century and the wooden Church of Ilya the Prophet, erected in 1690. Two-storied stone merchant mansions, built in the classical style in the early 19th century, are also preserved in Belozersk practically without changes.
In 2001 Belozersk became a full member of the Hanse. The oldest town of the Vologda land was officially invited by the Hanse to its ranks thanks to the considerable contribution of the medieval Belozersk into development of trade with the cities of the Northern Europe. At present day the Hanse joins more than 200 cities from 14 countries. Up to now only Veliky Novgorod, Pscov and Saint-Petersburg presented Russia in this prestigious extra-state union. The glorious history of Belozersk let the town supplement this list.
