Cherepovets is the largest
city of the Vologda Region. At the beginning of the 19th century the
development of Cherepovets was connected with the opening of the Mariyinskaya water sistem – in future the Volga-Baltic waterway. Today the
economical significance of the city for the Vologda Region is extraordinary
great and determined by functioning of the metallurgical enterprise “Severstal’”,
that enters into ten largest steelworks of the world.
Although Cherepovets is comparatively young city, its cultural life is
eventful and various. The Cherepovets museum association is of great
interest for the guests of the city. It was established on the basis of the
oldest museum in the Russian North – Cherepovets Local Lore Museum, founded
in 1886. |

The unique monuments of
icon painting, needlework, manuscript and the first printed books, studies
and academic drawings by the painter of battle-pieces Vasily Vereshchagin,
the citizen of Cherepovets, are preserved in the museum.
The most famous filials of the Association are the Memorial house-museum of
poet I. Severyanin, the monument of the Russian wooden architecture of 17th
century – church of Assumption in the village of Nelazskoye, the Memorial
house-museum of the Vereshchagins, the Historical and ethnographical museum
“The country-seat of the Galskys”. In the last one the championship of
Russian troikas is held. |

The most important event of the musical life of
Cherepovets is the International competition of performers on the folk
musical instruments “The Cup of the North”, taking place every three year.
The Governor orchestra of Russian folk instruments, known not only in Russia,
but also abroad, actively participates in this competition. The Russian
national theatre and the ensemble “The Russian North” are worldwide famous
too. In their performances folk dance traditions harmonize with various
streams of modern pop-culture.
