Cherepovets is the largest city of the Vologda Region. At the beginning of the 19th century the development of Cherepovets was connected with the opening of the Mariyinskaya water sistem – in future the Volga-Baltic waterway. Today the economical significance of the city for the Vologda Region is extraordinary great and determined by functioning of the metallurgical enterprise “Severstal’”, that enters into ten largest steelworks of the world.
Although Cherepovets is comparatively young city, its cultural life is eventful and various. The Cherepovets museum association is of great interest for the guests of the city. The most important event of the musical life of Cherepovets is the International competition of performers on the folk musical instruments “The Cup of the North”, taking place every three year. The Governor orchestra of Russian folk instruments, known not only in Russia, but also abroad, actively participates in this competition.
