VOICES OF HISTORY

In the cities of Vologda and Cherepovets the X International theatre festival “Voices of History” took place during June 24th - July 2nd. The founders of the festival were Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Union of theatre workers of the Russian Federation, Vologda Oblast Government, Vologda city administration. X International theatre festival “Voices of History” was held under financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation that covered the significant part of expenses of the festival budget.

“Voices of History” is not just the name of the festival; it is its main subject that is realized in organic combination of theatre art and a peculiar historical and architectural environment of the ancient city. The main idea of the plays is interpretation of the Russian history by the actors and the audience that couldn’t remain indifferent to any of the performances. It is especially important that the X International theatre festival “Voices of History” was devoted to the 65th anniversary of the Great Victory.

By its jubilee the festival gained good results by establishing a high reputation in the theatre circles of this country and abroad. During 20 years 56 theatres from different cities took part in the competition program of the festival.

The jubilee X International theatre festival “Voices of History” is a peculiar one. For the first time the festival theatre plays were showed not only in Vologda. Five performances from 23 included in the playbill were demonstrated on the stages of Cherepovets city.

The leading theatre workers of Russia including the Peoples Artist of RSFSR, a popular theatre and cinema actor Georgy Taratorkin represented the festival jury. Doctor of Art History, professor, Honored Science Worker of the Russian Federation Alexey Bartoshevich became the chairman of the jury. Candidate of Art History, Professor Irina Kholmogorova acted as the chairman of the expert council.
In competition and out-of-competition programs 16 theatre groups from Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Vologda, Zelenograd, Ufa, Veliki Novgorod, Minusinsk, Kudymkar, Greece, USA and Ukraine took part. For the first time during the festival history a play – a joint project of the Consulate General of Poland in Saint Petersburg and Saint Petersburg State academy of theatre art - was demonstrated in 2010.

The Vologda Oblast was represented by 3 theatres. Vologda awarded with the “Sign of Honor” State Drama theatre demonstrated a play “Echelon” in Consistorial court of the Vologda Kremlin. Vologda region theatre for young spectator showed a play “To forget Gerostrat” by the Pyatnitskaya Tower of the Vologda Kremlin in the frames of the competition program and inside the theatre building – a play “Forever alive” (out-of-competition show). A play “Childhood” by Vologda theatre “Svoy teatr” was included in out-of-competition program and was demonstrated in Galskys’ manor in Cherepovets city.

Every day meetings of a press club were arranged in the frames of the festival. The representatives of all participants of the festival including the Peoples Artist of SSSR Vasily Lanovoy and Peoples artist of Russia Evgeny Knyazev, actors of the Bolshoi drama theatre named after G.Tovstonogov, studio “SounDrama”, American actor and screenwriter Ronald Rand and other became guests of the journalists.

Under the support of the Ministry of culture of RF a project “New historical play” was developed at the X International theatre festival “Voices of History”. It was carried out in the form of creative labs. Express shows of fragments from modern historical plays in the new for Vologda frame – in the frame of reading – were staged by young Moscow producers. The actors from Vologda theatres took an active part in them. The project was completed by a round table “Historical play today: a trip to the past or a method to realize the present?”.

On July 2nd a prize presentation of the winners of the competition program of the International theatre festival “Voices of History” took place. All the theatres received letters of gratitude, diplomas and gifts.

Special prizes by the Vologda Mayor Evgeny Shulepov were presented to the group of the Bolshoi drama theatre named after G.Tovstonogov for the play “Maria Stuart” and to the group of the Academic Malyi drama theatre - Theatre of Europe for the play “Moscow choir”.

The prize after the name of A.P.Svobodin “For revealing a historical event by means of theatre” - Vologda awarded with the “Sign of Honor” State Drama theatre for the play “Echelon”, stage director Zurab Nanoboshvili.

The prize after the name of A.V.Semenov “For assimilation of historical and architecture environment by means of theatre” – “Vedogon’-theatre”, Zelenograd city, for the play “The Lower Depths”, stage director Alexander Kuzin.

The prize “For revealing of poetry of Chekhov’s plays in system of spatial metaphors theatre” – Lvov academic religious theater “Voskreseniye” for the play “Cherry Orchard”, stage director Yaroslav Fedorishin.

Prizes and diplomas of the X International theatre festival “Voices of History” for the plays demonstrated indoors received:

“For humane interpretation of the Russian history” – National youth theatre of Bashkortostan Republic named after Mustai Karim for the play “A Golden Cloud Spent the Night”, stage director Musalim Kulbaev.

“For delicacy, humor and compassion to a man in the twins and turns of our history” – Komi-Permyatskiy national awarded with the “Sign of Honor” drama theatre named after M.Gorky for the play “Sanya, Vanya together with Rimas”, stage director Sergey Andreev. Sergey Andreev was awarded by a special prize of the jury chairman – a book on Italian Renaissance.
