On September 11, 2010 a branch of the Ustyuzhna local lore museum
“Museum-Mansion of the Batyushkovs and A.I.Kuprin” celebrated its 50th
anniversary in Danilovskoye village. Celebrations of the 140th anniversary of
the writer Alexander Kuprin were attached to this date that bore a direct
relation to the Batyushkovs’ mansion.
The mansion was built by the grandfather Lev Andreevich of the famous poet
Konstantin Batyushkov in the XVIII century. The mansion was a family home of the
Batyushkovs and was handed down from generation to generation on the male line
up to 1917. Konstantin Batuyshkov spent his childhood in this house. The last
owner of the mansion was the professor of Petersburg University, philologist,
critic, literature expert, editor of journals Fedor Batyushkov. A famous Russian
writer Alexander Kuprin, a good friend of Fedor Batyushkov, often visited
Danilovskoye as a guest. In Danilovskoye Alexander Kuprin wrote many books and
articles. Many stories from life of the local people became the plot of the
writer’s books.
After the revolution of 1917 the mansion in Danilovskoye was nationalized and
during many years different institutions were placed there. Only in 1960 under
the initiative of the group of Ustyuzhna local people the first national museum
of the Batyushkovs and Kuprin was opened. By the resolution of the Council of
Ministers of RSFSR ¹ 1327 îf August 30, 1960 the mansion was given the status of
a monument of history of the national significance. Only in 70-s the museum got
the status of the state museum when it became a branch of the Ustyuzhna local
lore museum. In 1987 on the territory of the park a monument to the poet was
opened attached to his 200th anniversary. Nowadays in the museum there is an
exposition devoted to the history of the Batyushkovs family and the mansion, the
interiors of the XVIII-XIX centuries were restored, that brought the guests to
the far away times – to the life of the famous family.
During the jubilee year the museum was restored. By means of the national budget
in the frames of the investment program “Culture of Russia” the roof and central
porch of the mansion were repaired. By means of the regional program “Heritage
of Vologda land for 2009-2011” the portico of the southern façade of the
building was restored and the balcony of the attic storey was rebuilt.
During the Soviet times the building lost this interesting part. Architect and
restorer O. Nikitin during his work on the design of the scientific restoration
of the balcony was guided by the historical documents on the mansion building,
pictures of the mansion of the end of XIX – beginning of XX centuries. In 2011
the restoration works will continue. |
