Vozhegodsky district

The territory belonging to the Vozhegodsky district, was earlier a part of Charondskaya area, near lake Vozhe. The changes which were taking place in the country in the XVIII-XIX didn’t affect the mentioned territory due to its lack of reliable means of communication. Up to the XX century there were no industrial enterprises here, and only at the end of the XIX century the use of the main resource of the area – its woods - begins. So, in an almost agricultural place there appeared new social classes: merchants, timber merchants, workers. The construction of the railway Moscow - Vologda - Archangel, which began in 1894, contributed to it a lot. A year later on the map of Vologda province appeared Vozhega - originally a small railway station. The district as an administrative unit was formed in 1929.

Now the Vozhegodsky district occupies 5, 75 thousand sq. km.

The main natural place of interest here is Lake Vozhe. The main rivers Vozhega and Kubena today have become the water ways attractive to all lovers of rafting. Some of the places in the district have acquired the status of specially protected territories. The first wildlife sanctuary «Northern orchids» was founded here in 1982. In 1994 the Legislative Assembly of the Oblast founded two more wildlife sanctuaries: «Maryinsky pine forest» and «Zar’s pine forest».
